General Questions

1) What are students' most common reactions, both positive and negative, to the six week terms at Fuqua?

2) Are these shorter terms a benefit to prospective consultants, especially as they go into their summer internships? Why or why not?
3) As a career switcher, I am interested in why people generally choose to get into strategic consulting. I would like to know individual's reasons for choosing a career in consulting.

4) What cities do most Duke consultants end up? I realize that people must be spread out but where are the highest concentrations?

Hi Jesus,

As with anything, there are positives and negatives to everything.

1) I think the most common reactions are that students can't believe that the term is over already-- when they feel they've just started. As a positive, most students like that they can sample a number of courses without being stuck with a class they don't enjoy-- allowing them to choose what areas to go deep on or to try a new class with less risk (professor or topic). As a negative, some people feel like they are just getting to understand a topic before the term is over. The good news is they can then take the next course in that topic.

2) One benefit to prospective consultants is exactly that you get to try a lot of things-- get broad exposure. The tough part is, of course, that you may not have the depth. Fortunately, most consulting firms seem to do a lot of education once you start working there.

3) Reasons for going into consulting:

- Variety (project-based, 2-6 months, across industries)
- Travel (although you may be traveling to exotic locations like Springfield, IL)
- Challenge/Enjoy problem-solving

There are of course many others, including the fact that consulting often compensates very well.

4) This is hard to say-- it differs from internship to FT. Most (domestic) Duke consultants end up in a few cities for their internship: Chicago and Atlanta for example. Most firms recruit at Duke out of the Atlanta office. Internationals often return to their home countries, Shanghai, Seoul, etc. FT, it is all over the place from what I can tell, including San Francisco, NYC, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago.
