Role of internships in landing a full-time position.

Hi all,

I have some questions on the importance of internships to getting a full time position in a consulting firm.

- How important is it to do a summer internship in consulting, to get a fulltime position? I've heard its extremely important for some areas such as IB. Does that hold for consulting too?

- I've heard that getting a summer internship in consulting is generally tougher than getting a fulltime position. Any particular reasons for that?

- Anything in particular that international students must probably keep in mind while they're looking for internships / full-time positions.

Thanks,

Nikhil

Re: Role of internships in landing a full-time position.

Nikhil,

Thank you for your interest,

In the consulting industry, the precentage of interns getting a full time offer is higher than many other industries. With that said, consulting is a two-year game where there are much more opportunities for full-time employment than for summer internship. From my conversations with various consulting firms, I understood that the firms want to provide the right project for a summer intern, since some of the projects are longer or just require different set of skills. More than that, the firms need to allocate many resources for the summer intern. This combination is the reason why there are much more opportunities for full time hiring.

Regarding international students, they should keep in mind several points:

  • US culture is different and international students need to proactively learn how to be a part of this culture while still using the advantages that they bring from their home country.
  • There are many opportunities outside of the US that might be much more developing than US opportunities. These international opportunities can be in your home country or in other non-US countries.
  • Almost all the companies appreciate and hire international students for US positions as they bring diversity of skills and ideas to the table. Generally, the companies are looking for talent, both US and international.

I hope this helps, all the best!
